Afanc

The story behind the illustration

The Afanc is one of the lesser-known creatures of Welsh folklore, said to dwell in the dark waters of lakes such as Llyn Barfog and Llyn yr Afanc. Described as a fearsome water beast — part crocodile, part beaver — it was known to cause floods and destruction, dragging people into the depths.

This illustration reimagines the Afanc through a contemporary lens while staying rooted in folk art traditions.

It forms part of an ongoing series celebrating the lesser-known legends of Wales, bringing ancient stories into modern visual storytelling.
